Frequent Questions

How many people are affected by the Hazardous Waste Combustion Emission Standards Rule and what are they being protected against?

The health benefits resulting from this rule should be of significant benefit to communities everywhere, including those around the burners themselves. There are about 40 million Americans living in the same county as a hazardous waste burner. This represents about 15% of the total U.S. population. Much of this population lives within 5 miles of a facility.

The rule adopts tight standards to control emissions from hazardous waste burners that are of high concern to the thousands of communities around these facilities. The rule will dramatically decrease the emissions for these communities and others.
