Frequent Questions

Where can I get descriptions for the hazardous waste handling codes to complete the hazardous waste manifest?

Currently, the field for providing hazardous waste handling codes (Field K) on the hazardous waste manifest is optional. States which require the submission of hazardous waste handling codes in Field K also provide the instructions for the codes that should be entered, and these codes differ across the country. Please contact your state implementing agency, or the implementing agency of the destination state receiving the hazardous waste shipment, if they are different, for additional information on Field K. The Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery (ORCR) has compiled a complete list of waste program Web sites maintained by EPA Regional offices and state environmental agencies to help users locate the appropriate agency within their states.

On March 4, 2005, EPA established new requirements revising the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest regulations and the manifest and continuation sheet forms (70 FR 10776). Under the new manifest system, all fields on the manifest form, including Field K (re-designated as Item 19 on the new manifest form), are mandatory. The final rule also established one set of codes and instructions for all manifest users in all states and requires TSDFs to enter data in Item 19, entitled Hazardous Waste Report Management Method Codes. The most recent Hazardous Waste Report Management Method codes and descriptions for each code can be found in the 2003 Hazardous Waste Report Instructions and Forms Booklet. EPA will publish the 2005 Hazardous Waste Report Instructions and Forms Booklet in November 2005.

The March 4, 2005, Federal Register notice is available at the following URL:

Please be aware that the new manifest form will be mandatory after September 4, 2006. Until that time, only the old form can be used.
